Like so many small communities across the west, Victorville owes its latter origins to the railroad and in particular The Santa Fe. Back in 1885 a railway siding or station which was called Victor (named after Jacob Nash Victor) was built around the area that is now sixth street thus establishing the beginnings of Old Town Victorville. Fast forward to 1926, the inception of U.S. Route 66 which was one of the main arteries of the National Highway System linking Chicago, Illinois, with California. A portion of this famous highway provided a transportation corridor through Victorville, which was unsurpassed until Interstate 15 was constructed.
Today, Victorville is a robust and diverse community with a thriving community college (Victor Valley Community College). Some other amenities include- shopping centers, movie theaters and Sandia Family Fun Center. Residents and visitors alike can take advantage of horseback riding and hiking as well as several excellent golf courses, tennis courts and swimming and boating lakes. Even Hollywood has had reason to visit Victorville, using it for locations in such movies as: It Came from Outer Space (1953); Grand Theft Auto (1977), starring Ron Howard and filmed in downtown Victorville; The Hills Have Eyes (1977) by Wes Craven; The Hitcher (1986); Lethal Weapon (1987), filmed at El Mirage Dry Lake; Face/Off (1997), portions filmed at Southern California Logistics Airport; Contact (1997); Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004); The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006).
