The unincorporated community of Phelan is east of Palmdale and 18 miles west of Victorville nestled in the foothills of the eastern San Gabriel Mountains, spread between elevations of 3,000 and 4,000 feet and situated in the county of San Bernardino (also considered part of The Inland Empire).
The El Mirage Dry Lake and the Shadow Mountains lie at the northern edge of the valley, radiating out from there is a vast desert landscape where in a mirage you might think you could see a lone cowboy sitting a horseback.
There is no mall or movie theater, no amusement park or arcade. People do commute, though you are closer to State Route 138 then you are to Interstate 15. No, you don’t come here for shopping and entertainment, you come to Phelan for the wide-open spaces, the distant landscape that never ends and plenty of room to breathe the clear air.
